My Favorite Bible Books for Toddlers

If you have followed this blog for any length of time, you will have read this post and know I have struggled with getting Destructo to behave in church for quite some time.  We have tried coloring, random toys, treats, etc.  It is so much better than it was even six months ago, but he is still a handful during mass.  My church actually opened a cry room which I love since I don't feel as guilty about him talking loudly in (which he is quite apt to do at least a dozen times during the mass.)

But in our nearly three years of having a child, I have found a few books that I really like taking to church with us.
Ready for church Christmas Day

The winner winner chicken dinner is  Life of Jesus: Puzzle Block Bible.  They have a number of these books and they have four cube blocks in them that  you can arrange to show different Bible stories.  Destructo doesn't actually do this with it, but he loves to use them to make biscuits, or stack a tower, or whatever creative musings he comes up with that Sunday.

Lift-the-Flap Bible comes a close second.  He loves to lift the many flaps on each page and see what is hidden beneath it.  This book also has a lot of very good Bible stories and has continued to entertain him for an entire year so it is well worth the money.

For your very young toddlers, I would recommend Baby's First Bible.  Very simple stories with brightly colored pictures.  Oh and it is a board book so not so easy to destroy.  It also has a carrying handle to make it easy for unsteady walking toddlers to carry around.

Once your child is ready to graduate to an older child Bible, I recommend  The Beginner's Bible: Timeless
Children's Stories.  This book still has bright pictures, but has a lot more words and a ton of different stories.  It says ages 4-8 and I think that is about right although Destructo really enjoys it now at nearly three.  It is paper pages though so definitely not until your child is not a destructo of books.

Finally the last book that I most highly recommend is one Kai got for Christmas this year.  The One Year Devotions for Preschoolers.  It has a story for each day of the year with a Bible verse and a prayer to go along with it.  We read it each night right before bed and I have Destructo repeat the prayer.  He is a bit young still to fully understand the lessons the stories are trying to teach, but this is a book that will grow with him for sure.  Once he is a bit older, I plan on picking one of the Bible verses each week to use as a memory verse.

So what books are your favorites for church or just teaching your child about the Bible?
